Local Benefits
WASTE OFFTAKE
Acorn will be digesting whisky distillery co-products including pot ale, syrup and draff in combination with break crops and manures. Feedstocks are then delivered to the site to a secure and managed storage facility prior to being fed into the digestion process. The resulting digestate is pasteurised.
TRANSPORT OF FEEDSTOCKS
Acorn will encourage feedstock suppliers to use biomethane-powered HGVs to and from the anaerobic digestion site. Delivery of feedstock will follow an approved traffic management plan.
JOBS
Five full-time onsite jobs would be created, with approximately ten others indirectly employed offsite in other roles. 100 construction jobs would be created during the 12 month build programme. A variety of skilled support roles including gas engineers, administration staff, HGV drivers and silage contractors.
REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE – DIGESTATE
Acorn produces digestate which is supplied back to farmers. In comparison to carbon intensive artificial fertilisers, digestate is a cheap, sustainable and local source of fertiliser. Digestate contains optimal nutrients for healthy crop growth and positively benefits soil structure. By improving soil quality, digestate reduces nutrient run off and water pollution to improve the local environment.
BIOMETHANE
Biomethane is a green gas which replaces natural gas in the grid. This facility will provide enough gas to heat over 7,000 homes.
TRANSPORT OF BIOMETHANE
Acorn will transport their own biomethane on biomethane-powered HGVs to the injection hub. Biomethane-powered HGVs are currently used by John Lewis, Aldi and Argos.
BIOGENIC CO2
Acorn will capture a sustainable form of CO2 for use in local industries such as the food and beverage industry.
COMMUNITY BENEFIT
Acorn is committed to supporting the local community through the development of this facility. It will generate renewable energy, create jobs, manage waste efficiently, enhance energy security, and promote sustainability and economic growth.
